ReferenceBusiness Profile suspension

Business does not exist

Google disables a Business Profile when it decides the business does not exist at the location the profile claims. Check whether the business still operates at the listed address, and whether it moved or closed. Correct the address or the record first. Then reinstate the profile, because a disabled profile must be reinstated before anything else can be contributed to it.

At a glance

Where it shows
The profile shows as disabled. Google's policy page gives this reason as the business not existing at the location the owner claims.
What stops
Edits and content cannot be contributed until the profile is reinstated.
How serious
Serious for a business that gets calls from Maps. Google's page gives no timeline for reinstatement.

What it means

Google's help page says that if it determines a business doesn't exist in the location the owner claims, Google will disable the profile. The test is about the place: whether a business operates at the address on the profile, not whether a business with that name exists somewhere else.

The help page also says disabled profiles must be reinstated first. That makes reinstatement the first job, and the address question is what the reinstatement has to answer.

What actually triggers it

  1. The business moved or closed, and the profile kept the old address

    Not on Google's help page

The profile still points at a unit the business has left. The test is whether the business is present at the claimed location now, so an address that was correct last year can be the reason.

  2. A listed address the business does not use

A unit rented for mail or a storefront that is not in use gives the profile an address where no business operates. Google's test is operation at the location, and an address on paper does not meet it.

  3. A wrong unit number or digit in the address

    Not on Google's help page

A single wrong digit or a missing suite number places the business at a location where no business operates. Compare the profile address against the business registration and the building's own directory.

Fix it in this order

  1. Open the profile and read its status. A disabled profile has to be reinstated first, so confirm that is the status before choosing a route.
  2. Confirm where the business operates now. Check the registration, the lease or utility account, and the signage at the address.
  3. Correct the address if it is wrong. If the business has moved, put the current address on the profile. If the business no longer operates at any location, the profile is not the right channel for it.
  4. Request reinstatement through the disabled-profile steps once the address on the profile is right. A request made before the address is fixed asks the reviewer to approve the same address again.

Google's page does not say how long reinstatement takes, so keep the address evidence in one place in case the review asks for it.

When to appeal

Do not send content or edits to a disabled profile and expect them to post. The help page says disabled profiles must be reinstated first.

If the address is correct and the business does operate there, the business has to show that before the profile comes back. A change to an address that was never wrong does not help.

Often confused with

  • Suspended for a virtual office or unstaffed address

A virtual office is an address the business does not work from, decided on what kind of address it is. This reason is decided on whether the business is present at the claimed location, so the question is presence, not the type of address.

  • Disabled profile

Disabled is the status. This page covers the decision that leads to it. Read the disabled-profile page for what is blocked and how reinstatement works.
