ReferenceBusiness Profile suspension

P.O. Box address

Google does not permit a Business Profile address that is a P.O. box, and a profile set to one can be suspended. Google's page gives no repair, so the work is in the address field. Find the physical place where the business operates and put that address on the profile. If there is no such place, the profile needs a different setup, such as a service-area profile.

At a glance

Where it shows

What stops
The profile is suspended, so it is not available to customers while the suspension stands.
How serious
Serious for a business that gets calls from Maps. Google's page gives no timeline.

What it means

Google's help page says businesses with a P.O. Box address aren't permitted on Google Business Profile, and that a merchant who sets its address to a P.O. Box will have the profile suspended. The rule is about the address the profile shows as the business's location.

The page does not say how to fix this case. The repair is the owner's to make: change the address to one the business operates from, or set the profile up so the address is hidden and a service area is shown instead.

What actually triggers it

  1. A P.O. box entered as the business address

The box number may be the address the owner uses on mail, on a registration or in a website footer, so it gets copied into the profile's address field without a second look.

  2. A mailbox at a shipping or mail store

Google's guidelines say P.O. boxes or mailboxes located at remote locations aren't acceptable. A mailbox with a suite-style number at a shipping store looks like a street address, but the number format does not make it a place where the business operates.

Fix it in this order

  1. Open the profile and read the address exactly as it shows. Look for a P.O. box, a mailbox number, or a mail-forwarding address.
  2. Decide where the business operates. If customers come to a staffed place, that place is the address. If the business serves customers at their own locations, it is a service-area business and the address should be hidden.
  3. Change the address on the profile to the one you chose, then read the profile again to confirm it.
  4. Use the steps for suspended profiles in Google's help, after the profile matches the rule.

The page gives no timeline and no repair for the box itself. The address change is the work, and an appeal is the record of it.

When to appeal

An appeal sent while the address still reads as a box is judged on the address Google sees, so change it first.

If the business does not operate from any eligible address, an appeal will not change the outcome. The profile needs a different setup, not a different argument.

Often confused with

  • Suspended for a virtual office or unstaffed address

A virtual office is a real street address the business does not work from. A P.O. box is a box number. The two are fixed the same way, by an address the business operates from or a service-area setup, but the first step to find is different.

  • Co-working space

A co-working desk is a real place that can qualify with signage, customers during hours and staff. A P.O. box is a mailbox, so no amount of staffing makes it eligible.
