Business Profile suspension

suspended Google Business Profile / disabled Business Profile / Google Business Profile reinstatement

In short

A Business Profile suspension is Google restricting a business listing, or the Google Account that manages it, for breaking Business Profile policies. The way back is an appeal in Google's appeals tool, where evidence must go in within 60 minutes of opening the form and decisions can take up to 5 business days.

Google says it may suspend or disable Business Profiles that break its guidelines, and its policy overview names specific triggers. A profile that sets its business address at a P.O. Box will be suspended. If Google determines the business does not exist in the location it claims, Google disables the profile. Unnecessary information added to the business name can also lead to suspension. Where a violation is unlawful, Google says it may work with law enforcement.

Suspension can also arrive through the account. A merchant who shows a pattern of policy violations can have Business Profile access restricted. Every profile tied to that account is then suspended, and the account cannot create or claim other profiles. A profile created through an account for another Google product can be suspended when that other account is restricted. The account restriction is appealed first, on the My accounts page, and the profile appeal follows once it lifts.

Google describes what removal does. The public cannot go to a removed profile, and its owner and managers cannot act on it. If Google removes the owner's Google Account, every location that user owns goes with it. A suspended manager loses access, and the locations are unaffected. Reinstating the profile brings back its owner and managers too.

Appeals go through the Google Business Profile appeals tool. It shows the restricted profile, the reason for the moderation action and a link to the violated policy. Helpful evidence includes official business registration, a business license, tax certificates and utility bills, with a name and address that match the profile. Once the evidence form is open, it has to be submitted within 60 minutes.

Google says appeal reviews and decisions can take up to 5 business days, and the decision arrives by email. If the request is denied, Google may be able to do an additional review, with evidence the first appeal left out. Businesses in the European Economic Area can also refer an appeal to an out-of-court dispute settlement body.

In practice

A dental office finds its profile suspended. The appeals tool gives the reason and links the policy on business names, which a former agency had filled with services and a city. The office changes the name to match its sign, then gathers its business license and a utility bill showing the same name and address. It opens the evidence form only once both files are ready. It files one appeal, creates no replacement profile, and waits for the email.

Not the same as

Content restriction
A content restriction blocks a single edit, photo, video or post while the profile itself stays in place. Outside the UK and EEA it is appealed through Google's contact form, and suspended or disabled profiles go through the appeals tool.

Why it matters to you

Google's instructions during a suspension are narrow: fix the violation, appeal once with documents that match the profile, and wait. A second profile or a stack of repeat appeals goes against those instructions. Because a restricted Google Account suspends every profile it manages, the owner role belongs on an account the business controls and keeps clear of policy trouble.

What to ask or check

  1. 01Do the business name and address on your profile match the business license and utility bills the business could submit as evidence?
  2. 02Which Google Account holds the owner role on your profile, and what else does that account manage?
  3. 03Does your profile list a P.O. Box or any address where the business does not operate?
  4. 04If the profile is suspended, who files the appeal, and who makes sure nobody creates a new profile while it is under review?

What people get wrong

That a suspended profile is fixed by starting a new one or by appealing again and again. Google says not to create a new profile for the same business during review, and not to submit multiple appeals for the same issue before a decision.

Red flags

  • Advice to create a fresh Business Profile while a suspended one is under appeal. Google says not to.
  • A P.O. Box set as the business address. Google says those profiles will be suspended.

Google Business Profile

A Google Business Profile is the free listing that puts your business in Google Maps and in the local results beside search. Google's rule for qualifying is narrower than most people expect: the business must make in-person contact with customers during its stated hours, so online only businesses do not qualify.

Service-area business

A service-area business visits or delivers to customers and does not serve them at its own address, so its Google Business Profile hides the address and lists the areas it serves. The setting decides whether a home address is published, and a profile that breaks the rules risks suspension.

Account ownership

Account ownership decides who keeps the advertising account and its history when an agency relationship ends. Google lets anyone with administrative access unlink from a manager account at any time. Microsoft names the fix when the account was created in the wrong place, and lists what cannot be moved.

Local SEO

Local SEO is the work of showing up when somebody nearby searches for what you sell. Google names three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is the one you cannot change, and Google states plainly that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

Scaled content abuse

Scaled content abuse is Google's name for generating many pages mainly to manipulate rankings rather than help people. Its definition says this applies no matter how the content is created, so using AI is not itself the violation. Google states it focuses on the quality of content rather than how it was produced.

Structured data

Structured data is markup that describes your page in a shared vocabulary, founded by Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Yandex. Google is explicit about the limit: using it enables a feature to be present and does not guarantee that it will be present, even when the markup is correct.
