The Tag Manager changes have not been published
Google's tag troubleshooting page uses this heading for a GA4 Configuration tag set up in Tag Manager but never published. Until someone clicks Submit, visitors do not get the change, and no data reaches Analytics. A tag that looks right in the workspace has not reached any visitor. Publish the change, then confirm data arrives in Analytics before checking the tag ID.
At a glance
- Where it shows
- In Google's GA4 tag troubleshooting checklist. In Tag Manager, the change sits in the workspace unpublished.
- What stops
- No data reaches Google Analytics from the site.
- How serious
- Serious for measurement, since every visit is missed until the change is published. Quick to fix.
What it means
Google's help page on troubleshooting tag setup has a section under this heading. It says that after the GA4 Configuration tag is configured, the change has to be published by clicking Submit in Tag Manager, and that otherwise no data is seen in Google Analytics.
Changes in the workspace do nothing for visitors until they are published. A correct tag in the workspace can look finished to the person who set it up, which is why the message is easy to miss.
What actually triggers it
A GA4 Configuration tag saved, but the workspace never submitted
The tag was configured and saved, and the window was closed without clicking Submit.
A tag that was tested in the workspace and then left
Not on Google's help page
A tag that looks correct when tested in the workspace has not been published. The page's rule is that until it is published, no data reaches Analytics, whatever the test showed.
Fix it in this order
- Open the Tag Manager container for the site and find the GA4 Configuration tag that was set up.
- Click Submit to publish the workspace changes. The page says this is the step that gets the data into Analytics.
- Check that the publish went through, then wait a short time and confirm data arrives in Analytics.
- If no data arrives after publishing, check the tag ID and the tag installation, rather than publishing again.
The page says no data is seen until the change is published, so the first data after a publish is the proof. A preview is not.
Often confused with
Your Google tag is not installed on your website
That message means no tag is on the site at all. This one means the tag exists in Tag Manager, but its changes were never published to the site.
The Google tag ID is incorrect
A wrong tag ID means the tag is live and points at a different property. Publishing is still needed, but the ID is the problem to fix once it is.
