ReferenceTracking error

This conversion can't be imported

Google Ads says This conversion can't be imported when the click and the call fall outside the conversion window on the action. Remove or shorten the rows older than the window. If the window is too short for your calls, change the conversion window on the action itself, up to 90 days. Changing it affects every import into that action.

At a glance

Where it shows
The error returned for the row when the phone call conversion import file is uploaded in Google Ads.
What stops
The imported call is not credited. The ad keeps serving.
How serious
No policy risk. The cost is calls missing from bidding for any call outside the window.
How long
The longest conversion window Google allows is 90 days.

What it means

A call import needs the click and the call to fall inside the window set on the conversion action. A call outside it is refused whatever its quality.

The window is set on the action, so it affects all imports into that action, not only the refused rows.

What actually triggers it

  1. A file holding calls from months back

Google's page says the conversion must fall within the window. A file re-run with old calls refuses every row older than the window.

  2. A window shorter than the time from click to call

    Not on Google's help page

A window set for web conversions and reused for calls can be shorter than the gap between a click and a call that comes days later.

  3. An old import file uploaded again

    Not on Google's help page

A file from an earlier run, uploaded a second time, sends rows that were already outside the window on the first attempt.

Fix it in this order

  1. Open the error list and sort the refused calls by click date and call date. Count how many fall outside the window.
  2. If only a few rows are old, remove them from the file and upload the rest.
  3. If many calls fall outside a window that looks too short for your sales, open the conversion action and change its conversion window, up to 90 days, as Google's page says.
  4. Upload the refused calls again once they fall inside the new window, keeping the file to 25,000 rows or fewer, as Google's page asks.

The window is a setting of the whole action, so a change reaches every later import into it. Check that the new length still suits every kind of call counted there.

Often confused with

  • Identifiers or iOS URL parameters are too old

The click ID itself is past 90 days. Here the window is set on the action, and the click may still be usable.

  • The phone number isn't in a supported format

The call's number is malformed. Its time is fine, and the fix is in the file.
