No recent data

Tag Diagnostics shows No recent data when Google has never detected the Google tag on the site. It is not the same as Google tag has stopped sending data, which means the tag was seen and then went quiet for 48 hours. Confirm the tag with Tag Assistant first, then check whether it sits in a Tag Manager container that was never published.

At a glance

Where it shows
The Tag Diagnostics report in Google Tag Manager, as the status No recent data.
What stops
Anything measured through the tag does not record while the tag is missing from the live site.
How serious
A diagnostic status, not an account penalty. The gap stays until the tag is detected.

What it means

The status is about detection, not about whether the numbers look right. A tag that was never placed on the site, or was placed somewhere the live site does not load, leaves the status the same.

It is easy to confuse with Google tag has stopped sending data, which Google marks as urgent. That one means the tag was detected, then nothing arrived for 48 hours. The first is a tag that has never been seen; the second is a tag that broke, so they send you to different checks.

What actually triggers it

  1. The tag was never added to the site

Analytics only collects data from pages that include the tag. A site that never received it, or received it in a theme file a later redesign replaced, shows this status from the start.

  2. The tag sits in a container that was never published

Google's Analytics help says the container has to be submitted before the configuration reaches the site. Without that step, the tag exists only in Tag Manager and the live site never loads it.

  3. The tag belongs to another property

A tag with an ID from a different property is still a tag on the page. It is detected, so the status is not this one, but the data goes elsewhere. See the incorrect ID page for that case.

Fix it in this order

  1. Open Tag Diagnostics and read the No recent data status. Confirm the status name before anything else, because the urgent Google tag has stopped sending data needs a different check.
  2. Open the website in Tag Assistant and confirm whether any Google tag is detected on the page at all.
  3. If no tag appears, add the Google tag to the site, or confirm the tag sits in the container the site actually loads.
  4. If the tag is in Tag Manager, open the container and confirm its latest version was submitted and published. An unpublished change never reaches the site.
  5. If a tag does appear, compare its ID with the Measurement ID under Data Streams. A mismatch means the tag sends to a different property.

Run the same report again after the change. The status comes from the live site, so recheck it there rather than assuming the fix took.

Often confused with

  • Google tag has stopped sending data

The tag was detected, then no data arrived for 48 hours. Start from the live site, not from the container, because this tag once worked and something changed since.

  • Some of your pages are not tagged

The tag is detected on the site, but not on every page. The status is about coverage across pages, so the fix is the page list, not the tag itself.
