Your Google tag is not installed on your website
Analytics reports that the Google tag is not installed on the website when the property receives no tag data. The tag may be missing from the site, from some pages, or from a Tag Manager container that was never published. Confirm the tag on every page with Tag Assistant, publish the container, then check the tag's ID matches the property.
At a glance
- Where it shows
- In Analytics for the property, as the message Your Google tag is not installed on your website.
- What stops
- Every report for the property. No sessions, page views or events arrive while the tag is absent.
- How serious
- No penalty. Data is simply not collected until the tag is on the pages.
What it means
Analytics only collects data from pages that include the Google tag. When the tag is missing, or missing from some pages, the property has nothing to report. The message reads the same whether the tag was never added, was added to only part of the site, or sits in a container that never went live.
What actually triggers it
The tag was never added, or only some pages carry it
Google's help says to add the snippet to every page. A tag on the home page alone collects only the visits that begin there.
The tag is set up in Tag Manager but never submitted
Google's help says a configuration tag without a published container is not seen by the site. The step is Submit in Tag Manager, and without it you will not see data in Analytics.
GA4 is linked through the Google Ads tag
Not on Google's help page
In one observed case an audit reported no GA4 tag. GA4 was in fact linked as a destination of the Google Ads Google tag, in Google's own tag settings, and the container never named it. Check those destinations before adding a second tag.
Fix it in this order
- Open Tag Assistant on the home page and on a landing page, and confirm a Google tag loads on each.
- If GA4 may already be linked through the Google Ads tag, check that tag's destinations before adding anything.
- If Tag Manager holds the tag, open the container, select Submit, and publish the version.
- Compare the tag's ID with the Measurement ID under Data Streams. If they differ, use the stream's Measurement ID.
- Add the tag to every page, or to the template all pages share.
Data appears only after the tag has been on the pages and the container is live. Check the property after the change rather than assuming the fix worked.
Often confused with
Tag Diagnostics says the tag was never detected on the site. It reports the same gap from the Tag Manager side, and that page has the status-by-status checks.
The Google tag ID is incorrect
The tag is present and sends to a property, just not this one. Analytics then holds data for another property, not no data at all.
