Unknown clicks
Google Ads says Unknown clicks when a conversion cannot be tied to any Google Ads click. Some unknown rows are expected for lead uploads. If only some rows show it, ignore them. If every row shows it, or far fewer are attributed than expected, check that the site captures the click ID and the user data the form sends.
At a glance
- Where it shows
- The offline data diagnostics page in Google Ads, and the Uploads page for file imports.
- What stops
- The row is not attributed to an ad. The conversion may still count where its user data matches.
- How serious
- No policy risk. The cost is conversions attributed to nothing, which bidding cannot learn from.
What it means
Google uses this message when a conversion cannot be attributed to Google Ads. Its page says the message is expected and can generally be ignored with enhanced conversions for leads, because that setup uploads every conversion, including organic ones and those from other marketing channels, and only a portion will be Google-attributed.
The message does not say whether the lead was real. It only says Google could not attach it to a click.
What actually triggers it
Leads from organic search and other channels
Google's page says uploads of every lead, keyed by hashed email or phone, include organic conversions and those from other marketing channels. Those rows have no ad behind them, and a share of unknown rows is what they look like.
Forms that never carried the click ID
Not on Google's help page
A form that drops the click ID on the way to the submission, for example because a redirect or a multi-step form loses it, sends paid leads with nothing that ties them to the click. When every row shows the message, this is the place to look after the user data.
Rows uploaded without user-provided data
Google's page says that when all or most conversions show the message, or far fewer are attributed than expected, the site is probably not capturing user-provided data. A row carrying neither a click ID nor hashed data has nothing to match with.
Fix it in this order
- Count the rows that show Unknown clicks against all the rows in the same upload. A minority is expected.
- If only some rows show it and the rest are attributed, leave the unknown rows alone, as Google's page says for enhanced conversions for leads.
- If every row shows it, check the form captures the click ID and the email or phone it sends with the conversion.
- Run one real lead from a paid click through the site and confirm the row arrives with the click ID and the user data.
Unknown rows do not return to attribution after the fix. The check protects new rows, and the old ones stay unknown.
Often confused with
Wrong Google Ads account for clicks
The click exists, but the upload points at the wrong account. The row is attributed to nothing for a different reason.
Identifiers or iOS URL parameters are too old
The click ID is past 90 days. The fix there is cadence, not a check of the form.
