The Google tag ID is incorrect

Analytics reports an incorrect Google tag ID when the tag on the site sends to a different property from the one being checked. Copy the Measurement ID from Stream details under Data Streams, put it in the Google tag or the GA4 Configuration tag, then publish the container if Tag Manager holds the tag. Data goes to the property the ID belongs to.

At a glance

Where it shows
In Analytics for the property, as the message The Google tag ID is incorrect.
What stops
This property receives no data from the site, because the visits are sent to the property the ID belongs to.
How serious
No penalty. The data sits in the wrong property until the ID is changed.

What it means

Each property has its own Measurement ID, and the Google tag on the site has to carry the one for the property being reported. A tag copied from another property, or left over from an earlier setup, sends the visits somewhere else. The message names the mismatch, and the fix is one ID.

What actually triggers it

  1. An ID copied from another property or site

The help page names this case: the ID in the code does not match the property's stream. A tag pasted from another site or property sends each visit to that property.

  2. An old ID left in a Tag Manager configuration tag

If the site uses Tag Manager, the ID sits in the GA4 Configuration tag. An older ID left in that tag still sends visits to the old property, even when the site's own code has been corrected.

Fix it in this order

  1. Open Admin in Analytics, then Data Streams, and select the web stream for this site.
  2. Under Stream details, copy the Measurement ID.
  3. Compare it with the ID in the page source, and in the GA4 Configuration tag if Tag Manager is used.
  4. Replace the old ID with the Measurement ID. Google's help says the two must be the same ID.
  5. If Tag Manager holds the tag, publish the container. A corrected ID does nothing until the change is live.

Visits recorded before the change stay in the property they were sent to. Check the property after a few visits to confirm new data arrives there.

Often confused with

  • Your Google tag is not installed on your website

Nothing reaches Analytics at all. Here the tag is on the site and sends to a property, just not this one.

  • No recent data

Tag Diagnostics says the tag was never detected. With a wrong ID the tag is present, so this message is about where it sends, not whether it exists.
