Your Google tag wasn't detected on your website
The test on the Google tag's setup page loaded the address you entered and did not find your tag there. Usually the code is not live yet, sits on a different page or domain, carries another tag's ID, or waits in an unpublished Tag Manager container. Check the live page with Tag Assistant, fix what it shows, then test again.
At a glance
- Where it shows
- On the Google tag's installation instructions, after Test in the Test your website section.
- What stops
- Nothing stops on its own, but conversions and audiences that depend on the tag record nothing from the site.
- How serious
- No penalty. The result describes the page at the moment of the test.
- How long
- Google says data collection can take up to 30 minutes to start after the tag is installed.
What it means
Google's numbered setup steps for the tag end with a test: enter the website address under Test your website and select Test. This message is that test coming back empty. It is a check of one address at one moment, not a verdict on the whole site, and it does not say why the tag was missing.
Google's troubleshooting for a tag that is not found names two checks: that the measurement ID is the correct one, and that the code is live. Most failures come back to one of those two, reached by a few different routes.
What actually triggers it
The code is saved but not live
Not on Google's help page
A website builder or content system that holds changes until the site is published, or a page cache that still serves the old version, shows visitors and the test a page without the snippet. Open the live address in a private window and look for the snippet in the page source.
The tag sits in a Tag Manager container that was never published
Google's Analytics help says changes in Tag Manager show no data until Submit is selected and the version is published. A tag in the workspace alone is invisible to the site.
The snippet carries a different ID
Google's help names a wrong measurement ID as a cause when the tag is not found. A snippet copied from another account, property or site loads, but not as the tag being tested.
The address tested is not the page that has the tag
The test reads the address entered. A snippet added only to some pages, or a site that redirects the tested address to another domain or version of it, leaves the test reading a page without the tag. Google's tag coverage help lists redirects and trailing slash variations among the causes of false alerts.
The snippet was pasted somewhere it does not run
Google's setup steps say to paste the whole snippet immediately after the opening head element on every page. Its Analytics help adds that a word processor can change quotation marks or add spaces and break the code, so paste from a plain text editor.
The tag loads late or only after something happens
Not on Google's help page
A tag set to load after a delay, after the visitor interacts, or only after a consent choice may not have loaded when the page is checked. Tag Assistant, used while clicking around the page, shows whether it loads at all.
Fix it in this order
- Open the exact address you tested in a private browser window and confirm it loads without redirecting elsewhere.
- View the page source and search for googletagmanager.com. If the snippet is not there, publish the site or clear its cache, then reload.
- If the tag lives in Tag Manager, open the container, select Submit, and publish the version.
- Compare the ID in the snippet or tag with the one on the Google tag's setup page. Use that ID if they differ.
- Connect the address in Tag Assistant and check that your Google tag appears among the tags found.
- Run Test again under Test your website.
Once Tag Assistant finds the tag, check the Google tag's Tag coverage summary for pages still marked Not tagged. Google says a page's status there can take up to 24 hours to update.
Lead and call tracking is one of the things we sell, and it goes in before any ad budget is spent. A status like “Your Google tag wasn't detected on your website” is the kind of problem we fix as part of it.
Often confused with
Your Google tag is not installed on your website
The message Analytics shows when a property receives no data from the tag. This one is the result of the test on the Google tag's setup page.
A Tag Diagnostics status meaning Google has never detected the tag from the site's own traffic. The setup test checks one address, once, when you select Test.
Tag Manager holds event tags with no Google tag in the container to send them. The page may carry the container; what is missing is the base tag inside it.
