Google Ads account and Analytics property are not linked
Google Ads clicks and cost do not show in Analytics when the accounts are not linked, when auto-tagging is off, or when the landing page drops the gclid parameter. Link the accounts, wait at least 48 hours, turn on auto-tagging, then load a landing page with a test gclid to confirm the parameter survives.
At a glance
- Where it shows
- Under Product links in Analytics and under linked accounts in Google Ads.
- What stops
- Google Ads traffic and cost do not appear in Analytics, and clicks can lose their click ID at the landing page.
- How serious
- No penalty. Conversions that rely on the click ID are affected until the gap is closed.
- How long
- Google's steps say to wait at least 48 hours after linking.
What it means
Analytics imports Google Ads data only from a linked account, and it depends on auto-tagging to mark each click. Google's help sets three checks in order: the link, auto-tagging, and whether the landing page keeps the gclid parameter intact.
Each one fails differently. An unlinked account shows nothing in reports. Auto-tagging off can leave ads running with no click ID at all. A landing page that drops the parameter breaks the match after the click.
What actually triggers it
Accounts not linked, or linked less than 48 hours ago
Google's help checks the Date linked value, which must be at least 48 hours old before the data is judged. A new link that looks fine can still be too recent.
Auto-tagging switched off
Not on Google's help page
In real accounts, ads kept serving and forms kept arriving, just without the gclid. Lead matching, call attribution and offline uploads all broke, and nothing reported an error.
A landing page that rejects or changes the parameter
A page that fails to load once a gclid is appended, or that changes or removes the parameter, breaks the match.
Fix it in this order
- In Analytics, open Admin, then Product links, then Google Ads links, and confirm the account is listed.
- In Google Ads, open Tools, then Linked accounts, then Google Analytics and Firebase. The status should not read Not linked.
- Wait at least 48 hours after linking, and check that the Date linked value is at least 48 hours old.
- Turn on auto-tagging in Google Ads, following the enablement steps in Google's help article.
- In Google Ads, open Landing pages, copy one landing page URL without loading it, add ?gclid=TesTER-123 to the end, and load the page.
- If the page fails to load, or the parameter changes or disappears, change the website's settings for that page, or use manual tagging.
Give the data time before judging the link. Google's own check is at least 48 hours after linking, and the landing page test is the one that catches a parameter the site drops.
Often confused with
A report shows (not set) in the source column when Google Ads traffic is untagged. The fix sits in the link and auto-tagging steps here.
Conversion counts differ between Google Ads and Analytics
Both tools count, but a missing link or an auto-tagging gap makes Analytics show less Google Ads traffic. Check the link before comparing the numbers.
