ReferenceBusiness Profile suspension

Duplicate profile

A duplicate is a second profile for the same business, the same address, or one business split across profiles for different services. Google hides duplicates from Search and Maps. Check whether a verified profile already exists first. Then request ownership, claim an unverified profile, or remove your own mistaken copy. Duplicates on Maps are combined with a merge request.

At a glance

Where it shows
The duplicate does not appear on Google Search or Maps.
What stops
The duplicate's visibility on Search and Maps. The verified profile is the one that matters.
How serious
The duplicate is hidden. Removing your own mistaken copy also deletes its content and linked managers.

What it means

Google treats a profile as a duplicate when a verified profile already exists for the same business, when several profiles share one address, or when one business has several profiles, each for a different service.

Google's help page puts it in one line: if a profile is considered a duplicate, it won't show on Google Search or Maps. The rules apply by business and address, whatever the reason the second profile was made.

What actually triggers it

  1. A verified profile already exists

If the business already has a verified profile, a new one is a duplicate. Search for the business name and address before making any profile.

  2. Several profiles at one address

Profiles that share an address count as duplicates. Separate businesses at one address can each have a profile if they have different names and clearly visible differences in signage.

  3. One business split across service profiles

Google says to list multiple services on one profile instead of creating a separate profile for each.

Fix it in this order

  1. Search Google and Maps for the business name and address, and list every profile that comes up.
  2. If another person's verified profile exists, request ownership. The owner has 3 days to respond.
  3. If there is no response, claim the profile, when that option is offered. The page says it is not always available.
  4. If the duplicate is an unverified profile you own, claim and verify it.
  5. If the duplicate is one you created by mistake, remove it. This does not affect your verified listing, but the duplicate's content and linked managers are deleted.
  6. For duplicates on Maps, submit a merge request through Maps. Reviews combine, but review replies may be lost.

If distinct businesses were merged by mistake, contact support to appeal. Both businesses must be eligible and distinct, and a shared location may need photos of permanent signage.

When to appeal

Appeal to support only when distinct, eligible businesses were merged by mistake. A duplicate you made yourself is removed, not appealed.

Often confused with

  • Suspended for a virtual office or unstaffed address

A duplicate is hidden from Search and Maps because another profile covers the business. A suspension for the address stops the profile for a different reason, and its fix is the address, not the count of profiles.
