Change a negative keyword Google Ads won't let you edit

Updated October 12, 2026

10 minutes

Edit a negative keyword where it lives. A negative in a list changes only inside that list, under Tools, Shared library, Exclusion lists, and Google's steps for a list built in a manager account start in that manager account. Account-level negatives sit under Admin, Account settings. Google gives negatives no pause: download them, then remove.

Before you start

  • Standard or Admin access to the Google Ads account. Google's access table gives Read-only users campaign viewing but not campaign editing, so every edit control stays out of reach.
  • The negative's exact text and match type, copied from the search terms report or the change you are undoing.
  • Access to the manager account if the negative sits in a list a manager account built. Google's steps for editing such a list start in the manager account, not the client account.

Find where the negative lives

A negative keyword can sit in one of three places, and each one is edited in its own screen. Look in this order.

  1. Click Campaigns, open Audiences, keywords, and content, click Search keywords and open the Negative search keywords tab (called Negative keywords in some of Google's help). A negative added to one campaign or ad group shows here as its own row, with the campaign or ad group it belongs to. Performance Max campaign negatives are on this tab too.
  2. If it is not there as its own row, click Tools, open Shared library, click Exclusion lists and open the Negative keyword lists tab. Open each list your campaign uses and look for the word. Google says lists made in a manager account are added to the Shared library of its client accounts by default; if the list was built in a manager account, Google's steps for editing it start in that manager account (see below).
  3. If no list in the account holds it, click Admin (some Google help pages call it Settings), then Account settings, and expand Negative keywords. These negatives apply to search and shopping inventory in Search, Performance Max, App, Shopping, Smart and Local campaigns.

Edit it in that place

Each place has its own edit control, so use the one that matches where the negative was found.

  1. A campaign or ad group negative: on the Negative search keywords tab, hover over the keyword, click the pencil icon, change the text or pick a new match type, and click Save.
  2. A negative in a list: in Exclusion lists, on the Negative keyword lists tab, click the list's name, make the change and click Save. Google says the change reaches every campaign that uses the list, so check which campaigns share it before you save.
  3. A list built in a manager account: sign in to the manager account, click Tools, open Shared library, click Exclusion lists, open the Negative keyword lists tab and click the list to edit it.
  4. An account-level negative: under Admin, Account settings, Negative keywords, hover over the keyword, click the pencil icon, edit the keyword, the match type or both, and click Save.
  5. A Performance Max negative: tick the keyword, click Edit, choose Change keyword text, enter the new text with match type symbols and click Apply.

In Display and Video campaigns the match type cannot be changed at all: Google adds every negative there as broad match. That is the case Google names where the match type is meant to stay fixed.

Switch a negative off for a while

Google's help gives negative keywords an edit and a remove, but no pause. To lift one for a test or a season, keep a copy and remove it.

  1. On the Negative search keywords tab, click the download icon above the table and save the file, so the exact text and match type are on record.
  2. Tick the negative and click Remove. Add it back from your file when the test or season ends.
  3. For a whole list, do not delete it. In Exclusion lists, tick the list, tick the campaigns it should stop covering and click Remove list from selected campaigns. The list stays in the Shared library, ready to apply again. Google will not delete a list that any campaign still uses.

Check it worked

Reopen the place you edited: the Negative search keywords tab, the list, or Account settings. The negative should show the new text and match type. Change history under Campaigns records the edit with the date, which is the date to start from when you judge it.

Give it a few days of traffic, then open the Search terms report with the date range starting the day after the change. Searches the old negative blocked should appear only if you meant to let them back in.

Editing negatives in Google Ads Editor

In Editor, negatives are their own type: select Keywords and Targeting, then Keywords, Negative. Select one or more and change them in the edit panel; when several are selected, the change applies to all of them. Post the changes to send them to the account.

When you paste negatives into Editor's multiple-change tools, a match type is written either as a column value (negative broad, negative phrase, negative exact) or with symbols, dash first: -keyword, -"keyword", -[keyword]. Google's Editor help says [-keyword] and "-keyword" are wrong formats.

Why a negative from the search terms report won't block similar searches

Google adds negatives from the search terms report to a Search campaign as exact match by default, which blocks only that exact search. To make it block more, open the pencil and pick broad or phrase in the match type drop-down. The full diagnosis of a negative that does not block is in the related how-to below.
