Additional domains detected for configuration
Tag Diagnostics shows Additional domains detected for configuration when the Google tag runs on domains not listed in its settings. Open Monitored domains to see the auto-detected ones. Add each domain that belongs to the business under Configure your domains. Ignoring a domain only stops the alerts; the tag keeps running there, so fix any page that should not load it.
At a glance
- Where it shows
- Tag Diagnostics, reached from the Google tag settings under Your Google tag, Tag quality, View diagnostics.
- What stops
- No ad or conversion stops. The message is a configuration alert about where the tag was seen.
- How serious
- Low. The cost is a domain missing from cross-domain measurement, or a copy of the tag running somewhere it should not.
What it means
Google has seen the tag on one or more domains that are not specified in the Google tag settings. Google's fix is to specify all of the domains that use the tag, which is the Configure your domains setting.
That list is not only bookkeeping. Google says it enables cross-domain measurement and decides which links on the site do not count as outbound clicks when automatic event detection is on. Adding a domain therefore changes measurement, while ignoring one in Tag Diagnostics changes nothing but the alerts.
What actually triggers it
A booking or form service on its own domain that loads the tag
Not on Google's help page
A third-party booking or form page on its own domain can load the same Google tag. The tag then reports from a domain not listed in the settings.
A staging or old copy of the site still serving the tag
Not on Google's help page
A test or previous copy of the site, still online, that loads the same tag reports from a domain nobody lists.
A second domain the business runs
A separate shop, booking or landing page domain running the same tag is a domain Google detects automatically and lists as a recommendation in Configure your domains.
Fix it in this order
- Open the Google tag settings, select View diagnostics under Your Google tag in Tag quality, then select Manage in Monitored domains. The detected domains are listed under Auto-detected domains.
- For each one, work out which page loads the tag there: your own site, a booking or form service, or an old copy.
- For domains that belong to the business's journey, open Configure your domains in the Google tag settings, select Add on the recommendation or add a condition by hand, and select Save.
- For a staging or old copy, remove the tag from that copy or take it offline. Then select the ignore icon beside the domain in Monitored domains if the alert should stop.
Google says an ignored domain no longer triggers alerts but tagging is not affected. Ignoring is a choice about alerts, not a fix, and the domain can be added back from the ignored list with the plus icon.
