Fix a declined payment in Google Ads and get your ads running again

Updated October 11, 2026

15 minutes, plus your bank

To fix a declined payment in Google Ads, read the reason under Billing, Summary, and fix it with your bank. Then, under Billing, Settings, click Fix it on the payment method to retry or replace it and pay the overdue balance. Finally, add a backup card and check who gets payments emails.

Before you start

  • Admin or Billing access to the Google Ads account. Google says that for accounts with the Organization account type, adding or editing a payment method needs one of the two. On an Individual payments profile, or if Google shows a permission error, the change needs Admin or Edit payments profile permission on the payments profile itself.
  • Your bank's phone number. Google says the bank declines the payment, not Google, and Google Ads support cannot help with a decline.
  • A second card, if you have one. It can pay the balance now and back up the next charge.

Find the reason for the decline

The Billing Summary page shows the date, amount and, when Google has one, the reason for each declined payment; with no reason listed, only your bank can tell you.

  1. In Google Ads, click the Billing icon, then Summary. In the current month's card, expand the breakdown and find the declined payment under Payments.
  2. Match the reason to Google's fix. Not enough funds: add funds, then retry. Over a credit, transaction or charge-count limit: ask the bank, then retry. Expired card: enter a new one. Wrong number or CVV: re-enter it. Online or international transactions blocked: ask the bank to allow them, or use another card.
  3. For direct debit, Google adds two more: an owner name that does not match, and a closed bank account. Both need corrected or new billing details.

Retry or replace the payment and clear the balance

Ads run again only once a payment goes through and the overdue balance is paid; Google says that should typically reactivate an account paused for a payment problem.

  1. Click the Billing icon, then Settings. Under Payment methods, find the declined card and click Fix it.
  2. To use the same card, check the details, click Retry, review the outstanding balance and click Pay Now.
  3. To use a different card, click Fix it, Use a different payment method, then Continue. Enter the new card, click Save card, then Pay Now.
  4. If a new method paid the balance but the old card stays primary, retry the old card too, or Google warns ads could stop again.
  5. On direct debit, Google calls a card payment the fastest route; bank payments take 3 to 5 business days. Once the balance is paid, click Fix it on the bank account to re-enable direct debit.

On monthly invoicing, click the Billing icon, then Billing transfers, pick the invoice setup, click Summary, then Make a payment.

Make sure the next decline is caught and covered

Google Ads access and payments profile access are set separately, so the person running the ads may not be the person who receives Google's payments emails.

  1. Click the Billing icon, then Settings, and find Payments users. Each payments profile has one primary contact, who receives all payments emails. Other users get the payments emails their email preferences are set to.
  2. If the primary contact has left, reassign that role. That needs Admin or Manage users permission on the payments profile itself; Admin access to Google Ads is not enough. Without it, the primary contact, or someone on the same company email domain, asks Google Ads support, quoting the Payments Profile ID.
  3. Under Payment methods, open the Actions menu on a second card and click Set as backup payment method. Google charges it only when the primary fails. It must be a card, not a bank account, and there can be only one.

A payments profile can be shared with other Google products, such as Google Cloud. Google says an edit made inside Google Ads, such as a new payment method, applies to them too; the Google payments center lists which products would be affected.

Check it worked

Open Billing, then Summary. The payment should show as completed under Payments in the current month's card, and the current balance should no longer include the overdue amount.

Then watch Impr. under Campaigns. Google says a card payment normally processes within one working day, with ads able to run within 24 hours after; a bank payment takes 3 to 5 business days.

Why are the ads still running after a decline?

Google says some qualifying accounts keep running briefly after a decline, to allow time to fix the payment method. The balance still has to be paid.

What if Google asks to verify the payment method after a decline?

Google says it may sometimes require payment verification, especially after a decline, which may involve submitting documents. Follow the instructions shown in the account.
