Cancel a Google Ads account
Updated October 11, 2026
20 minutes, plus up to a month for the final bill
To cancel a Google Ads account, pause every campaign and download the reports you want first. Then an Admin opens Admin, Account settings, Account status and selects Cancel my account. Ads stop within 24 hours, but costs already run up are still charged, so keep a valid payment method until the final charge clears.
Before you start
- Admin access to the account. Google says only users with Admin access can cancel an account or reactivate it later.
- Billing setup completed. Google says an account with incomplete billing setup must finish it before it can be canceled and any refund started.
- The customer ID, login email and billing details. Google Ads support asks for them if the only Admin has left the business.
Pause the campaigns and save your data
Pause every campaign before you cancel, because Google says campaigns left active start running again if anyone reactivates the account later.
- Open Campaigns, select the checkbox at the top of the table to select every campaign, click Edit and choose Pause. Do not choose Remove: Google says a removed campaign can never be resumed or restored.
- On each page whose numbers you want to keep, set the date range, click the download icon above the table, click Download and pick a format.
Google says you can still sign in to a canceled account and see its data, but maybe not after an extended period.
Cancel the account
An Admin cancels from Account status on the Account settings page in the Admin menu.
- Click the Admin icon, then Account settings.
- Click Account status to open the section.
- Select Cancel my account. Google says all ads stop within 24 hours.
- If a manager account owns the account, an Admin of that manager can cancel it there instead: click Accounts, then Management, check the box next to the account, click Edit and select Cancel. This needs Admin access to the manager and ownership of the account.
- If the only Admin has left the business, contact Google Ads support with the details listed under Before you start.
Settle the final bill
Canceling stops the ads, not the bill: Google says it charges any remaining balance to the primary payment method within 31 days.
- Open Billing, then Summary. On a postpay account the unpaid costs show under Balance; on monthly invoicing they show under Amount due.
- On monthly invoicing, open Transactions and search for Campaign activity line items after the date your ads stopped.
- Leave the primary payment method in place until the final charge has gone through. Google says to replace an expired card so the final charge is not delayed.
- Only after the final charge and any refund have gone through, remove the card under Billing, Settings, Payment methods: open its Actions menu and select Remove.
Remaining prepaid funds go back to the original payment method. Google says promotional credits are not refunded, and that if you paid by bank transfer, the refund may need your bank details under Billing, Settings.
Check it worked
Google sends an email when an account is canceled, and a notice appears at the top of the account. Check the customer ID to be sure it is the right account.
Watch Billing, Summary over the next month. The balance should fall to zero after the final charge, and any refund shows its status there. Google says refunds typically take 4 to 12 weeks in total, including the time your bank takes.
Can a canceled account be reactivated?
Yes, for free, within limits. An Admin opens Admin, then the page Google's reactivation article calls Preferences, expands Account status and selects Reactivate my account. The notice at the top of a canceled account also has a Reactivate link.
Google's pages disagree on the limit: one says you will always be able to reactivate, while others say you may not be able to after an extended period. Google also says an account suspended for a policy violation may not be reactivated, and an account linked to a manager that has hit its account limit cannot be until the manager frees a slot.
Google may ask you to verify payment details and send documents, which Google says it reviews within 48 hours. Signing in to a canceled account does not restart ads or costs.
Campaigns and ads left active start running again on reactivation; paused ones stay paused until you enable them.
A reactivated account with no activity and no ads served for 3 months is canceled again automatically.
An account with no spend for more than 15 months is canceled automatically.
What else stops when the account is canceled?
Google says remarketing lists owned by the account, Customer Match included, are closed to new users at once. About a month later every user is removed from them, lists shared with other accounts stop working for those accounts, and dynamic remarketing parameters are deleted.
Should you pause instead of canceling?
Google suggests considering pausing your campaigns instead of canceling when the account has no remaining balance. Paused campaigns keep their settings and history and stop accruing charges, so pausing also suits an account you may use again.
