Remove a manager account's access to your Google Ads

To remove a manager account's access, sign in as an Admin, open Admin, Access and security, then Managers, click Remove access, then Unlink. Unlinking is not the same as removing a user: the provider's logins sit on the Users tab and are removed there. Move billing first if their manager account pays your monthly invoice.

Before you start

  • Admin access on a login of your own. Google requires admin-level access to the client account to unlink from your side, and only Admin can unlink manager accounts.
  • Who pays for your ads. The Billing Settings page shows the paying manager if you are on monthly invoicing.
  • An answer from the provider on whether their manager account runs your conversion tracking or shares remarketing lists with you.

Unlinking keeps your campaigns and their history, but billing, conversion tracking and audiences that run through the manager account can stop with it.

  1. Open Billing, then Settings. If you pay by monthly invoice and the paying manager is the one you are removing, Google says the account will stop serving after you unlink it. Ask them to change the billing setup first; Google says the new setup has to be created under a manager account yours will be linked to, such as the next provider's.
  2. If their manager account runs cross-account conversion tracking for you, its tag stops recording conversions for clicks after the unlink. Clicks from before keep counting for the conversion window, typically 30 days. Your own tag, if it is still on the site, resumes tracking.
  3. If you use the manager's shared remarketing lists, ad groups that target them and campaigns that exclude them stop running after the unlink. Replace them with lists your own account holds.

The full order for a provider who is leaving, billing and tracking included, is in the FAQ linked below.

Any Admin on your account can unlink a manager, including one that owns your account: Google says client users cannot turn ownership off, but can always unlink an owner manager.

  1. Sign in with your Admin login, click the Admin icon, then Access and security, then the Managers tab.
  2. Find the manager account and click Remove access in the Actions column.
  3. Read the preview of how your account will be affected, then click Unlink.

Once unlinked, your account can be linked to a new manager account, such as the next provider's.

Remove the provider's own logins

Removing a user is a separate task on a separate tab: logins the provider was invited with directly are listed under Users, not Managers.

  1. On Access and security, open the Users tab and look for email addresses from the provider's company.
  2. Click Remove access in the Actions column for each one.
  3. On an account with more than 3 administrators, removing a user needs another Admin's approval within 20 days, under the Security requests tab. Google says its support cannot approve or deny it for you, and Admins of a linked manager account can review these requests too. Removing the provider's logins after the unlink means only your own Admins decide.

Check it worked

Open Access and security again. The Managers tab should no longer list the manager account, and the Users tab should list only people from your business, with at least two of them on Admin.

The next day, open Campaigns and confirm impressions and clicks are still coming in, which shows billing carried over. If the manager ran your conversion tracking, confirm your own conversion actions record new conversions after the unlink date.

Can the provider unlink from their side instead?

Yes. An Admin of their manager account clicks the Accounts icon, then Sub-account settings, ticks your account, then chooses Edit, then Unlink. Google allows a manager to end the link only while the client account has at least one user with access, or is linked to a manager account that owns it. If nobody at your business has a login yet, get one before anyone unlinks.

Unlink, or only turn off ownership?

If you want to keep working with the provider but stop their manager account controlling who gets in, ownership can be turned off without unlinking. Only an Admin of the owner manager account can do that, from Sub-account settings, Edit, then Remove owner, and your account must have at least one user with administrative access. Inside your own account, the only control that ends ownership is the unlink.
