Click too recent

Google Ads says Click too recent when the upload came in less than six hours after the ad click. Wait six hours and send the row again. If your system uploads each lead as it arrives, add a hold so rows wait six hours before they are sent. A row sent straight away is the one that gets refused.

At a glance

Where it shows
The offline data diagnostics page in Google Ads, and the Uploads page for file imports.
What stops
The row is not credited until it is sent again. The ad keeps serving.
How serious
No policy risk. The cost is conversions that take a day to appear, and refusals that look like faults.
How long
Six hours from the click, according to Google's page.

What it means

Google needs a click to be at least six hours old before an upload can match it. The refusal is a timing rule, not a fault in the lead or the click.

A system that uploads at once creates the refusal every time, so the error reads as a fault when the send is early.

What actually triggers it

  1. An automatic upload that runs as the lead arrives

A form or CRM that posts each conversion the moment a lead lands sends it inside the six hours by design.

  2. A daily batch that runs straight after the leads land

    Not on Google's help page

A nightly or hourly job that picks up the day's leads can refuse rows whose clicks came in the same few hours.

Fix it in this order

  1. In the error list, compare each refused row's click time with the time it was sent. Rows sent within six hours of the click are the cause.
  2. Hold rows in the sending system until six hours after the click, rather than sending them the moment they arrive.
  3. Send the held rows again after six hours have passed. Google's page says to retry after six hours.
  4. If refusals continue after a day, check the time zone of the rows, since a zone error can make a fresh click look older or newer than it is.

Holding rows is the fix, not repeated retries. A system that keeps retrying a row inside the six hours will keep getting the same refusal.

Often confused with

  • Invalid conversion times

The conversion is dated before the click. Waiting does not help that one, and the time must be corrected.

  • Unknown clicks

The conversion cannot be tied to any click at all. Time is not the problem.
