Location asset requirements

Google disapproves a location asset when it lists a business location without the owner's explicit approval, when the location is unrecognized or permanently closed, or when the product or service is not sold or found there. Get the owner's explicit approval, or replace the location with one that is recognized, open and matches the business. Then save the asset and check its status.

At a glance

Where it shows
The Status column on the Assets page, as Disapproved under this policy.
What stops
The location does not serve while it stands.
How serious
Low on its own. Repeated violations of any policy can lead to a suspension.

What it means

A location asset ties an ad to a place. Google requires that the place is a real, open location, that its owner has agreed to the ad, and that it fits what is advertised. Google's page names three messages, Location owner approval, Physical location unavailable and Product or service not relevant to location, and each is a failure of one of those conditions, so read which one the asset carries before changing anything.

What actually triggers it

  1. A location that belongs to another business

The location belongs to another business, and its owner has not given explicit approval for your ads to use it.

  2. A closed or unrecognized location

A location that Google does not recognize, or one that is permanently closed, cannot be advertised. A location that has reopened needs its status updated, as the page describes.

  3. A location that does not fit the product

The location must match the business in the ad, and the advertised product or service must be sold or found there. Google's example: a bank in Florida cannot use a bank location in California.

Fix it in this order

  1. Open Assets, find the location asset marked Disapproved, and read which of the three messages its status gives.
  2. If the location belongs to another business, get that owner's explicit approval, or remove the location from the ad.
  3. If the location is closed or unrecognized, update its status if it has reopened. If the online location cannot be edited, upload a compliant location instead.
  4. If the product or service is not sold or found at the location, replace the location with one where it is.

Appeal from the Google Ads account, or use the Disapproved ads and policy questions form that the page links to.

When to appeal

Appeal when you have fixed the asset or disagree with the decision. An appeal does not change the location, so make any needed change first.

Often confused with

  • Business name not relevant

The business name text does not fit the business. A location asset is the place the ad points to. The fix for a location is an approved or matching place, not a new name.
