Set an automated rule to pause campaigns at a spend limit

Updated October 11, 2026

20 minutes

Create an automated rule from the Campaigns page: choose Pause campaigns, add the condition Cost greater than your limit, and run it Daily using data from Same month. A rule acts only when it runs, up to 2 hours late, so set the limit below your real ceiling and schedule a second rule to restart the campaigns.

Before you start

  • Standard or Admin access to the Google Ads account, since a rule edits campaigns.
  • Your monthly ceiling for each campaign, written down, and each campaign's average daily budget.

Set the limit below your real ceiling

Give the rule a limit lower than the most you will pay, by at least one day's maximum spend, because the campaign keeps spending between the rule's checks.

  1. For most campaigns, Google never charges more than 30.4 times the average daily budget in a month, so if that figure is already under your ceiling, the budget does the job.
  2. Work out one day's maximum spend for the campaign: for most campaigns Google may spend up to 2 times the average daily budget on a given day.
  3. Subtract that from your ceiling, and use the result as the rule's limit. Example: a campaign with a 1,000 dollar monthly ceiling and a 40 dollar average daily budget (a monthly limit of 1,216, above the ceiling) can spend up to 80 in a day, so the rule's limit is 920. This margin is a judgment, not a Google setting.

Google says a rule may run up to 2 hours after its scheduled time, and in most cases cost figures are refreshed hourly, with occasional delays. A once-a-day rule that checks just before the campaign crosses its limit lets it run until the next day's check, so a full day's maximum covers most of the gap, though a late run or delayed cost figures can let a little more through. Several checks a day narrow it.

Create the pause rule

Build the rule from the Campaigns page and apply it only to the campaigns you pick.

  1. Click the Campaigns icon, then Campaigns. Click the 3-dot icon above the statistics table and select Create an automated rule.
  2. Under Type of rule, select Pause campaigns. Under Apply to campaigns, choose Select campaigns and tick the campaigns.
  3. In the Condition section, click +ADD, select Cost, set it to greater than your limit and click Apply.
  4. Under Frequency, choose Daily at an hour other than the restart time below, such as 4:00 AM, using data from Same month.
  5. In Email results, choose to be emailed when the rule runs with changes or errors.
  6. Name the rule, click Preview (it changes nothing), then click Save rule.
  7. To check more than once a day, create copies set to different hours, such as 12:00 PM and 6:00 PM. Google advises against running rules on the same campaigns at the same time.

Google's example pauses any campaign that has spent the amount, so the condition is read campaign by campaign. Two campaigns can each stay under it while together they pass it, so give each campaign its own share of the ceiling.

Schedule the restart for next month

A paused campaign stays paused until something turns it back on, so schedule that now.

  1. From the same 3-dot icon, select Create an automated rule again and choose Enable campaigns.
  2. Under Apply to campaigns, choose Select campaigns and tick the same campaigns.
  3. Under Frequency, choose Once and set the first day of next month at about 1:00 AM. Name the rule and click Save rule.

A one-time rule runs once, so create a new one for each month the cap applies. Leave out any campaign you paused by hand for another reason, or the rule will turn it back on.

Check it worked

Click the Tools icon, open Bulk actions and click Rules. The Version history tab lists each run with a Status such as Completed or Completed, with errors; click the results to see which campaigns it paused.

In Change history, filter by Tool to find the pause. Rules act on behalf of the user who set them up, so the pause can show that person's email; the Tool filter is what marks it as the rule's change.

Get an email at a spend level instead of a pause

To decide yourself, use Google's own budget example: a Send email rule with the condition Cost greater than an amount, run Daily at 12:00 PM using data from Same day.

Undo a pause the rule made

For Search campaigns, open Version history on the Rules page and click Undo in the Actions column. A preview shows its effect first.

Only the most recent run of each rule can be undone; undo that first to reach an earlier run.

Changes made by hand after the rule ran are kept, and an undo cannot be redone.
