Fix "Unverified" or "No recent conversions" on a Google Ads conversion

Updated October 11, 2026

30 minutes

Hover over the Unverified or No recent conversions status in Goals, Conversions, Summary to read Google's reason. If the site uses Tag Manager, make sure the conversion tag is in the published version, not just a saved workspace. Then test the live site in Tag Assistant, choosing Debug live version if the site uses Tag Manager, then trigger the conversion.

Before you start

  • Access to the Google Ads account and to the website's Tag Manager container, if the site uses one.
  • Publish permission in Tag Manager. Container owners can keep Publish to a few people, so find out who holds it before you start.
  • A way to trigger the conversion yourself, such as a test form submission. Tell whoever reads the form inbox, since it arrives as a real lead.

Read what the status means

Each status points to a different cause, so read Google's reason before changing the tag.

  1. In Google Ads, click the Goals icon, open Conversions and click Summary. Find the action in the conversions table and read its Tracking status.
  2. Hover over the status. Google says Unverified, Tag inactive or Needs attention often means it has not received data recently or the tag is not communicating correctly. Go on to the next part.
  3. No recent conversions can mean no paid ad clicks led to a conversion in the last 7 to 14 days. If your own records show a lead from an ad click in that time, treat it as a tracking problem and go on. If not, it may be low traffic, and the status changes to Recording when one arrives.

Make sure the tag change is live

A tag saved in a Tag Manager workspace looks finished to the person who built it, but visitors run only the published version.

  1. Open tagmanager.google.com and the container for the site. Click Versions and find the newest date in the Published column. That version is the one your site runs.
  2. Open that version and look for the conversion tag, the conversion linker and the trigger that fires the tag. If one is missing, the live site lacks it.
  3. Go back to the workspace and click Submit at the top right. If the Workspace Changes section lists the conversion tag or its trigger, those edits were saved and never published.
  4. Select Publish and Create Version, enter a Version Name and Version Description that say what changed, and click Publish.

Publishing also creates a version, which is your way back: from Versions you can publish the earlier one again if something breaks.

Test the live site with Tag Assistant

Tag Assistant shows whether the conversion tag fires on the live site when the conversion happens.

  1. Back in Goals, Conversions, Summary, hover over the status and click Troubleshoot, then Continue. Troubleshoot appears only for Unverified, Tag inactive and Needs attention. For No recent conversions, open tagassistant.google.com and click Add domain instead.
  2. Enter your home page or a landing page, not the thank-you page, and click Connect. Keep both tabs open.
  3. If the site uses Tag Manager, return to the Tag Assistant window and select Debug live version, then go back to your site. Tag Manager's own Preview button tests the unpublished workspace, so a pass there says nothing about what visitors run.
  4. On your site, do what counts as the conversion, such as sending the form. Then click Finish on the Tag Assistant badge. If it saw nothing, click I thought I already triggered it to get Google's reasons.
  5. Click Close Tag Assistant to return to the conversions summary.

Check it worked

Google updates actions verified in a Tag Assistant session after about 30 minutes. A verified action shows No recent conversions, which is expected, and changes to Recording when the site receives a conversion.

If you changed the tags rather than only testing them, allow 24 to 48 hours for the tracking status to update. Google notes that on very low traffic these alerts can be false positives that clear once traffic rises.

Tag Assistant still finds nothing on a published tag

Google's troubleshooting page lists these causes:

The Google tag is missing from some pages. It needs to be on every page, including a new domain or a new thank-you page.

No conversion linker in Tag Manager. Google recommends it fire on all pages.

Auto-tagging is off, or a redirect strips the click id from the landing page address.

The conversion label in the tag does not match the label on the conversion action in Google Ads.

The thank-you page is on another domain with no cross-domain tracking, or the form sits inside an iframe.

A cookie consent banner blocks the tags before the visitor agrees.

The tag is recording but the action is Secondary

A Secondary action reports in the All conversions column and not in the Conversions column, so a working action can still look empty there. Google's troubleshooting page says to set it to Primary if you want it in the main columns and used for bidding.
