Fix a call button that isn't showing on your Google ads

Updated October 11, 2026

Check four things in order. Call reporting must be on, or Phone Impr. reads zero even when the button shows. A call asset on the campaign must be enabled and approved, since it takes the place of the account one. The campaign must still serve on Search. Then the auction decides: assets need enough Ad Rank.

Before you start

  • Access to the Google Ads account that can open reports and account settings.
  • The dates the calls stopped, so every report below covers the same days.

Make sure the report can see the button

Google counts a phone impression only when the ad showed with a Google forwarding number. With call reporting off, the ad shows your own number and the phone columns stay at zero, button or not.

  1. Click the Admin icon, then Account settings, and read the Call reporting setting. If it is Off and you want calls measured, select On and click Save. Google says the change can take up to 24 hours to reach live ads.
  2. Open Campaigns, set the date range to your problem dates, click the Columns icon, choose Call details, and add Phone Impr., Phone calls and PTR. Click Apply.
  3. Compare the problem dates with the same span before them. A button that showed and then stopped points to a change; one that never showed points to the setup.

Find the call asset each campaign actually uses

An approved asset at account level is not the one that serves if the campaign or ad group has its own. Google uses the most specific level.

  1. Click the Campaigns icon, then Assets, choose Association from the Table view drop-down, and select Call from the asset types above the table.
  2. For the campaign with no calls, find every call asset attached to it or to its ad groups, and read each one's status. A paused or disapproved asset there does not serve; enable or fix it, or remove it so the account-level asset applies.
  3. Click the pencil icon beside the asset, choose Edit, open Advanced settings and read the Asset schedule. A call asset scheduled for business hours does not show outside them.
  4. If the asset is disapproved for Unverified phone number, Google could not find the number on the site in the ad. The setup page covers how to verify a call tracking number.

Call assets run on Search and Smart campaigns, and Google says one added to a Display campaign may not serve. A Performance Max campaign can shift its spend between channels on its own, so if its Search impressions fall, calls from the button can fall with them while every call setting looks unchanged.

  1. For a Performance Max campaign, open it, click Insights and reports, then Channel performance.
  2. In the time series chart, pick Google Search and look at impressions across your problem dates. Then compare the channel distribution table's Google Search and Google Display Network rows.
  3. Read the Status column, hover over any status that is not Eligible, or select View channel diagnostics. Campaign has a call goal but call asset is missing or disapproved names the problem directly.
  4. If Search impressions fell after a change to budget, target CPA or locations, that change is the place to start, not the phone number. Google lists bid targets and frequent changes among the reasons a channel stops spending, and says to allow one to two weeks after significant changes.

Check it worked

Over the following week, Phone Impr. should climb back for the campaign. If phone impressions return and Phone calls stays at zero, the button is showing and the problem is the number or the line it rings, so call it yourself from another phone.

If the asset is approved, enabled, on Search and still rarely shows, the auction is the limit. Google shows assets only when Ad Rank and ad position are high enough, so the levers are ad quality and bids.

Calls stopped right after the number was changed. Was it the number?

Not necessarily. With call reporting on, the searcher dials Google's forwarding number, which routes the call to the number in the asset. First read the asset's status, since a new number is reviewed again and can be disapproved as unverified. Then read Phone Impr. and the channel report for the same days. If phone impressions held steady and calls stopped, test the new number by calling it. If phone impressions fell, the ad stopped showing the button, and the cause is upstream of the number.

Why Google's call count can differ from your own log

Google reports a call on the day it happens and a call conversion on the day of the ad click. A call also counts as a conversion only when it lasts as long as the action requires.
