Tracking and link tools

Ad platforms bid toward whatever they are told counts as a result. If a form fill or a call never reaches them, they keep spending toward the wrong people and report a cost per lead that is not real.

These tools check what the platforms actually hear, and make sure the links you place yourself report where their visitors came from.

Use them in this order

  1. Step 1

    Conversion tracking check

Run this before you spend anything on ads, and again after any change to your site or forms. It sends your form and taps your number in a real browser, stops every report before it leaves, and shows which platforms would have heard about the lead.

  2. Step 2

    UTM builder

For the links ad platforms do not tag for you: emails, social posts, texts, your Business Profile and printed pieces. Each place gets its own tagged link, so each shows up as its own source in Google Analytics.

  3. Step 3

    QR code generator

Build the tagged link first, then put it in the code. A scan from an untagged code arrives with no referrer and is counted as direct traffic, the same as someone typing your address.

Where tracking usually breaks

A thank-you page is not proof of a lead

A conversion that fires when a page loads counts refreshes, bookmarks and visitors who land there by mistake. Count the form submission itself, with the email or phone it carried, so the platform can match it to the click.

Phone taps are not calls

Tapping a number on a phone only opens the dialer. A tap tracked as a conversion counts people who never placed the call. Use call tracking, or count calls that last long enough to be a real conversation.

Tag the source, not the campaign name you will forget

Keep source and medium to a short fixed list and put the detail in the campaign. Five spellings of one newsletter in analytics are five sources, and none of them adds up to the truth.

Track form submissions as Google Ads conversions with Tag Manager

Create a website conversion action in Google Ads, then add a Google Ads Conversion Tracking tag in Tag Manager that fires once per successful submission, not on a button click or page view. Map the form's own entry ID and a value, and publish. Without the ID, a junk form fill can never be withdrawn later.

Turn on enhanced conversions for leads in Google Ads

Turn it on in two places. In Google Ads, open Goals, Conversions, Settings, tick enhanced conversions and accept the data terms. Then make your form's tag send the email or phone the visitor typed. Without that tag, an uploaded email or phone has no form record to match, and Google falls back to the click ID.

Track clicks on your phone number as a Google Ads conversion

Create a Google Ads conversion action for phone number clicks and fire it from Tag Manager on links whose Click URL contains tel:. Set Count to One, since Google counts every tap by default. A tap is not a call: where real calls are tracked, make the tap action Secondary, or one caller counts twice.

Save the Google click ID with every form lead

Add hidden fields named gclid, gbraid and wbraid to every form, and a script on every page that stores the ID from the ad's landing address and fills those fields. Keep the latest ad click, let redirects pass the ID through, and test with a made-up ID. Google's sample script saves the gclid only.

Question

Why is Google Ads not tracking all of my leads?

Google Ads is not tracking all your leads because it only counts leads it can tie to your ads, so leads from anywhere else never show. Leads from ads go missing when the tag misses a finished form, the click ID is lost, or a cookie banner blocks the tag. Test one form fill, then check each.

Question

Why doesn't Google Ads show all my phone calls?

Google Ads only shows phone calls it can tie to an ad, and only the kinds of calls you set it up to count. Calls from your Business Profile, unpaid search or a number someone already knew never reach it. If calls from your ads are missing, fix the setup. If the rest are missing, that is expected.
