Resize first. A photo straight off a phone is often 4,000 pixels wide, and a website rarely shows one wider than 2,000. Cutting the dimensions does more for file size than any quality setting.
Images are usually the heaviest thing on a page and the most common reason a site is slow on a phone. Most of the weight is pixels nobody sees.
These tools resize, compress and convert images in your browser. Your files are never uploaded.
Resize first. A photo straight off a phone is often 4,000 pixels wide, and a website rarely shows one wider than 2,000. Cutting the dimensions does more for file size than any quality setting.
Then convert photos for the web. WebP is usually smaller than JPG at the same visible quality, and every current browser shows it.
Then set the quality while comparing file sizes, and stop where the difference starts to show.
For places that still refuse WebP or PNG, such as some email programs and older upload forms. Pick a background, because JPG has no transparency.
Photographs compress well as WebP or JPG. Logos, screenshots and anything with sharp edges or text stay crisp as PNG or WebP, and turn blotchy as JPG.
Each save at a lossy quality throws detail away again. Keep the original and export every size from it, rather than shrinking a file that was already compressed.
