ReferenceTracking error

Google tag has stopped sending data

The Urgent status means a Google tag that was detected earlier has not been detected for 48 hours, so the data it sends has dropped to zero. Check the tag with Tag Assistant on the live site first, then the tag and its trigger in Tag Manager, comparing the live version rather than the workspace. Repair the tag, publish, and read the status again after another 48 hours of traffic.

What it means

Tag Diagnostics marks a tag Urgent when a tag that was detected earlier has not been detected in the last 48 hours. The data the tag sends drops to zero while it is missing.

Urgent is about silence, not a cause. Google's page says to review the setup, confirm the Google tag is implemented correctly, and check the installation with Tag Assistant on the website.

What actually triggers it

  1. A site update that removed the tag from many pages

    Not on Google's help page

Google's page does not name a cause. A site update that replaced a template or a shared header can remove a tag from many pages at once, and nothing on the site errors.

  2. A Tag Manager publish that replaced a working tag

    Not on Google's help page

A later publish from an older or different workspace can leave out a working tag. The live site then runs the newer version, and the tag stops.

  3. A tag whose trigger no longer matches the page

The tag is on the site, but its trigger no longer matches the page or form it was set for. Google's troubleshooting section asks you to confirm the tags fire on the right triggers.

Fix it in this order

  1. Open Tag Assistant on the live site and check the Google tag is installed on the pages where it should be.
  2. If the tag is in Tag Manager, check the live version rather than the workspace. The workspace can differ from what visitors run.
  3. Fix the tag or its trigger, publish a new version, then test again with Tag Assistant.
  4. Give it 48 hours of traffic, then read the status again, since the status is set on that window.

The status clears only after the tag is detected again. Read it after a full 48-hour window rather than right after the publish.

Often confused with

  • Awaiting conversions

Seven days with no conversions. Urgent is about a tag that has gone silent for 48 hours. The two can happen together, so check the tag before waiting out a week.

  • Eligible (Misconfigured)

A campaign status about a missing tag, where no biddable conversions have recorded in 28 days. Urgent is a tag that was there and went quiet.
