Collage

Google disapproves an image asset that combines several images into one through post-production, such as a montage assembled in a design tool. A photo of a naturally occurring collage, such as a scrapbook page, is allowed with limits. Replace the asset with a single photograph cropped to the required ratio, then edit and save it.

What it means

The rule is about how the image was made. Google's page says a collage combined in post-production is not allowed, so the test is whether several photographs were joined into one picture, not whether the picture shows several things. A scrapbook or a printed yearbook page is allowed because the collage was a physical object before anyone photographed it.

The image specifications apply to every image asset: PNG or JPG, square at least 300 by 300 pixels, and no larger than 5120 KB.

What actually triggers it

  1. Several photos joined in an editor

Photos placed side by side or stacked in a design tool and exported as one image are the case the rule names. Check the file itself, not only the ad.

  2. A template with a grid of pictures behind the text

A template layout with a grid of pictures, exported as one image, is the same case under the rule's wording rather than a separate case.

Fix it in this order

  1. Open Campaigns, then Assets, and find the image asset with the status Disapproved.
  2. Choose one photograph that shows the subject on its own, in PNG or JPG format.
  3. Crop it to a square at 1x1, which is required. A landscape at 1.91x1 is optional but recommended.
  4. Hover over the asset, select Edit, make the change and select Save.

If the asset cannot be replaced with a single photograph, remove it.

When to appeal

Appeal only when the image is one photograph and the asset is still disapproved. An appeal does not change the file, so replace it first.

Often confused with

  • Text or graphic overlay

An overlay is text or graphics laid on top of an image. A collage is several images combined into one. An image can have one of these problems without the other.
