ReferenceGoogle Ads disapproval
High APR personal loans (US specific)
Google does not allow US personal loan ads with an APR of 36% or above. The APR must be disclosed prominently and calculated consistently with the Truth in Lending Act. An ad that targets the United States alongside other locations shows as Eligible (limited). Lower the maximum APR below 36% and disclose it, or remove the ad.
At a glance
- Where it shows
- The Status column on the Ads & assets page, as Disapproved for ads at 36% or above.
- What stops
- The ad stops serving. Repeated violations of the related policy also count toward a strike.
- How serious
- Serious over time. This policy uses the strike system of the Personal loans policy, and the third strike suspends the account.
What it means
Google does not allow personal loan ads in the United States where the APR is 36% or above. The policy covers direct lenders, lead generators and businesses that connect consumers with third-party lenders.
The disclosure is part of the rule. The APR must be shown prominently and calculated consistently with the Truth in Lending Act. The page does not describe a certification process for this policy.
What actually triggers it
A maximum APR of 36% or above
The test is the maximum APR of the promoted loan. A product whose maximum reaches 36% is disapproved.
An APR shown only in fine print, or not at all
The APR must be disclosed prominently. An APR that is missing, buried, or calculated differently from the Truth in Lending Act method does not meet the disclosure requirement.
US and non-US targeting in one campaign
The page says an ad that targets the United States alongside other locations shows as Eligible (limited). That status is worth checking on purpose, not reading as a pass.
Fix it in this order
- Confirm the maximum APR of the promoted loan is below 36%.
- Disclose the APR prominently on the landing page or in the app, calculated consistently with the Truth in Lending Act.
- In Google Ads, go to Ads under the Campaigns menu, hover over the ad or asset, and select Edit.
- Revise the ad to match the loan terms, then select Save. Re-review typically takes 24 to 48 hours.
- Check the Status column on the Ads & assets page. If the ad cannot be fixed, remove it to help prevent account suspension.
When to appeal
Appeal from the account when the promoted loan's maximum APR is below 36% and the APR is disclosed the way the rule requires.
An appeal does not change the APR on the page. If the loan terms reach 36%, change the terms or remove the ad before appealing.
Often confused with
The wider rule: repayment term, disclosures and the strike system. A loan can pass the disclosure checks there and still be disapproved here on its APR.
