Fix "Data thresholds applied" hiding numbers in GA4

Updated October 11, 2026

10 minutes

When GA4 says thresholding is applied, widen the date range first. If rows are still missing, set Reporting identity to Device based in Admin; Google says the switch changes no collected data and can be reversed anytime. For missing search queries, check Search Console, which lists more of them, though Google hides very rare queries there too.

Before you start

  • Editor or Administrator access at the account level, which Google requires to change the reporting identity.
  • The report and date range that shows the warning, so you can test the fix on the same view.

Confirm it is thresholding

This part confirms the missing rows come from a data threshold rather than from data that never arrived.

  1. Open the report and look at the data quality indicator at the top. Thresholding shows the message that Google Analytics has applied thresholding to one or more cards and will only display data that meets the minimum aggregation thresholds.
  2. Note what the report contains. Google may apply thresholds when a report includes demographic data, audiences built on demographics, or search query information with too few users.
  3. If there is no thresholding message and totals sit near zero, the report is probably not thresholded; the property may be receiving little or no data, and the page on GA4 showing no data covers that.

Bring the rows back

Try the three changes in this order, from the one that changes nothing to the one that changes how users are counted.

  1. Widen the date range, for example from 7 days to 90. Google says data may be withheld in a narrow date range with low user or event counts, and a wider range may bring it back.
  2. Click Admin and, under Data display, click Reporting identity. Select Device based and click Save. Google says that with Blended or Observed, reports are subject to data thresholds; Device based uses only the device ID and may bring rows back.
  3. For missing search queries, open the Performance report in Search Console for the same site. Google says the organic search query data in GA4 can also be found in Search Console, which usually lists more query rows, though Google also leaves out very rare queries there to protect searchers' privacy.

Google sets thresholds itself and they cannot be turned off. The changes above make them less likely; none guarantees every row returns.

Check it worked

Reload the same report with the same date range. The thresholding message should be gone, or fewer cards should carry it, and the missing rows should show.

Demographic rows may stay hidden on a site with few visitors, because Google withholds them to protect individual users whatever the setting.

What Device based costs

Blended fills gaps for visitors who decline cookies by modeling their behavior from similar visitors. Device based does not model them. If the site sends a User-ID, Blended and Observed also join a signed-in visitor's devices; Device based does not, so that person on a phone and a laptop counts as two users. On a site with no User-ID, the cost is mainly the modeling. Google says the choice changes no collected or processed data, so it is reasonable to switch to Device based to read a thresholded report and switch back afterward.

Demographic data in explorations only goes back two months

Google keeps age, gender and interest data for only 2 months for explorations and funnel reports, whatever the retention setting. Standard reports are not affected. In a demographic exploration, a range longer than about 60 days adds no demographic data, so widening the range there may not bring rows back.

Google signals and demographics

Google says turning on Google signals may enrich demographic and interest reporting for signed-in users who allow ads personalization. That data feeds demographic reports, and it is the kind of data the thresholds protect.
