Make a custom event parameter show up in GA4 reports
Updated October 11, 2026
10 minutes, plus up to 48 hours
Register the parameter as an event-scoped custom dimension: Admin, Custom definitions, Create custom dimensions, scope Event, and the parameter name exactly as your site sends it. GA4 receives custom parameters but keeps them out of reports until then, and the dimension shows 24 to 48 hours later. Register it the day the site starts sending it.
Before you start
- The Editor role or above on the GA4 property, to create custom dimensions.
- A way to trigger the event yourself, so you can read the parameter's exact name as GA4 receives it.
Read the exact name GA4 receives
This part copies the parameter name from GA4 itself, because the dimension matches that name and cannot be edited after saving.
- Open Reports, then Realtime, and trigger the event on your site in another tab.
- In the Event count by event name card, click the event to see the parameters it carried. For a closer look, use DebugView under Admin, Data display, and click the event in the stream. DebugView lists events only from a browser with debug mode on, which Google Tag Assistant or preview mode turns on for your own browser.
- Copy the parameter name exactly as listed. If the parameter is missing, the site is probably not sending it yet. Fix the sending first, because the dimension can only show values GA4 receives.
- Check the parameter is not already a predefined dimension, such as the page address or transaction ID. Google advises against registering those: it uses up a custom dimension slot for data reports already have.
Register it as a custom dimension
Registering tells GA4 to turn the parameter into a dimension that reports and explorations can use.
- Click Admin. Under Data display, click Custom definitions.
- Select the Custom dimensions tab and click Create custom dimensions.
- Enter a Dimension name. It is what reports will show. Hyphens are not allowed; use spaces or underscores.
- Set Scope to Event. It cannot be changed after you save.
- In Event parameter, paste the name you copied. It cannot be changed after you save either, so check the spelling before clicking Save.
A dimension with the wrong scope or parameter cannot be edited. Create a new one with the right settings, and archive the wrong one only if the slot is needed: archiving cannot be undone and affects any exploration or audience that uses it.
Use it in a report
Once GA4 has processed new data, the dimension can be added to explorations and to detail reports.
- Wait 24 to 48 hours. Google counts the wait from when the data was sent and the dimension was created, so trigger the event again after registering it.
- Click Explore, then create or open a free-form exploration.
- In the Variables column, click + next to Dimensions, open the Custom tab, select your dimension and click Import.
- Drag the dimension into Rows in the Settings column.
Check it worked
Two days after registering, the exploration should list the parameter's values in rows beside the event count.
If it is still empty, compare the name under Event parameter in Custom definitions with the parameter DebugView shows for a fresh test, sent from a browser with debug mode on. An empty DebugView usually means debug mode is off, not that the event failed. If the two differ, the dimension is matched to a name nothing sends, and the fix is a new dimension with the name DebugView shows.
Days before you registered it
Google times a new dimension from when the data was sent and the dimension was created, and none of its pages describe filling in days from before that. Register a parameter the day the site starts sending it, not when a report first needs it.
Values that should not become a dimension
Google warns against high-cardinality custom dimensions on standard properties, giving a unique ID per user, a session ID and a timestamp as examples. They can push report rows into an (other) row. Google also treats any value that looks like a number as a number, so text such as 94E40 is read in scientific notation.
Running out of custom dimensions
A standard property allows 50 event-scoped custom dimensions. Quota information at the top right of Custom definitions shows how many are used. Google says that after deleting dimensions at the limit, you wait 48 hours before adding new ones.
