Unfair advantage

Google disapproves ads that try to gain an unfair traffic advantage in the auction. Its examples are showing more than one ad for one business in a single ad location, and promoting near-identical products and prices across related sites. Keep one ad per location, give each destination distinct content, remove the duplicates, then save and let the review run.

At a glance

Where it shows
The Status column on the Ads & assets page, as Disapproved under this policy.
What stops
The flagged ad stops serving until the duplicate or overlap is removed.
How serious
Low on its own. Google warns at least 7 days before any account suspension, but repeated violations can lead to one.
How long
Google says re-review typically takes 24 to 48 hours after an edit.

What it means

Google's policy says an advertiser cannot use the Google network to gain an unfair traffic advantage over other participants in the auction. It also expects ads to be useful, varied, relevant and safe for users. Its examples concern duplication: several ads for one business in one place, and the same offer spread across related destinations.

The rule is about the ad location and the offer, not the number of campaigns. A business can run several campaigns. The problem is two ads from one business competing for the same location with the same message.

What actually triggers it

  1. Two ads for one business in one location

Two ads from the same business are set to show in one ad location, for example two campaigns that target the same searches with near-identical text.

  2. The same product and price on related sites

Related sites promote the same products at the same prices, so each destination offers no distinct value.

  3. Keywords that do not match the search

Keywords do not match the likely search intent of the audience, which Google's page names as a requirement.

Fix it in this order

  1. In Google Ads, go to Campaigns, then Ads, and find every ad your business runs for the same searches in one location.
  2. Remove the duplicates so one ad remains for each location, or remove the campaign that duplicates it.
  3. Give each destination that remains distinct content, product or price, rather than a copy of another site's offer.
  4. Hover over the ad or asset, select Edit, make the change, and select Save.

When to appeal

Appeal from the account after the duplicate is removed, if the remaining ad is the only one for that business in its location.

Do not appeal while two ads for the business still share a location. The review will see the same overlap.

Often confused with

  • Evasive ad content

Ads that try to get around the review. This one is about how many ads a business shows in the auction, not about trying to get past review.
