Microsoft Advertising disapprovals and tracking errors

Microsoft Advertising's editorial review statuses, its UET tag and conversion goal statuses, and the account, budget and keyword statuses that stop ads, with what sets each off in practice and the order to fix it.

Microsoft Advertising disapprovals

The status in the Delivery column when an ad, asset or keyword fails editorial review.

  • Approved Limited

Approved Limited means the ad or keyword is approved and serving in at least one targeted location, and pending review or disapproved in another. Hover over the status to see the location and the reason. If it reads that no rejection data is available, the review is still running; otherwise edit the ad for that location's policy or request an exception.

  • Disapproved

Disapproved means part of an ad failed Microsoft Advertising's editorial review and will not serve: the ad text, an asset, a keyword, an extension or a disclaimer. Hover over the status in the Delivery column to read the reason, edit or replace the part named, and request an exception only when the policy plainly does not apply.

Microsoft Advertising tracking errors

UET tag and conversion goal statuses that stop conversions being counted.

  • No recent conversions

No recent conversions means the UET tag is active but this conversion goal recorded nothing in the last seven days. Microsoft names three causes: the goal was set up wrong, the pages with the conversion are not tagged, or nobody converted. Check the goal's scope, window and status first, then the clicks, then test the goal with UET Tag Helper.

  • Tag inactive

Tag inactive means Microsoft Advertising has received no activity from the UET tag in the last 24 hours, and every conversion goal on that tag shows the same status. Check that the tag code is still on the live site, test a page with UET Tag Helper, and if the code is there, check whether the account still has access to the tag.

  • Unverified

Unverified means Microsoft Advertising has never received activity from the UET tag. A new tag can take up to 24 hours. If it still reads Unverified after that, the code is not on the site, is installed incorrectly, or the site carries a different tag. UET Tag Helper on a live page tells which.

Microsoft Advertising delivery statuses

Account, budget and keyword statuses that stop or thin out ads with no policy reason.

  • Below first page bid

Below first page bid means a keyword's bid in Microsoft Advertising is too low for its ads to appear on the first page of search results. Raise it from the Keywords table with Edit, then Change current bid, and choose the estimated first page bid. If the ads already show on page one, the keyword has competed in only a few auctions.

  • Campaign out of budget

Campaign out of budget means the campaign has spent its budget, so Microsoft Advertising has paused all of its ads. They come back on their own at the start of the next day. To resume now, raise the budget in the Budget column of the Campaigns table and save; Microsoft says budget changes usually take effect within an hour or so.

  • Eligible, limited by budget

Eligible, limited by budget means the ads run, but Microsoft Advertising shows them less often than it could because the daily budget is below what it recommends. The campaign ran out of budget at least once in the past seven days, or is expected to. Raise the budget only if the campaign brings leads; otherwise narrow what it spends on.

  • Hold

Hold means Microsoft Advertising has stopped every campaign in the account, almost always over money: a declined card, an overdue invoice, too many chargebacks, or suspicious changes. Select Remove the hold in the red banner, then Fix declined payments to pay the balance with a working card. An invoiced account or one held for suspicious changes goes through Support.

  • Low search volume

Low search volume means a keyword has little or no search history on the Microsoft Advertising Network, so it is inactive and will not trigger ads. Microsoft checks it again every week and turns it back on if searches pick up. Wait if it names a new brand or product; otherwise replace it with a broader keyword people actually search.
