AI Assistant channel

GA4 AI Assistant channel / ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics / ai-assistant medium

In short

The AI Assistant channel is a Google Analytics 4 traffic channel for visitors who arrive from AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot or Grok. It excludes Google's own AI Overviews and AI Mode, which GA4 counts as Organic Search, so AI traffic is split across two channels.

Google Analytics sorts every visit into a default channel group, and AI Assistant is one of the channels. Google's help page describes it as the channel by which users arrive from sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot or Grok.

The definition has a deliberate gap. The same page says AI Assistant excludes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, and describes Organic Search as including them. A visitor who clicks a link inside an AI Overview is counted as organic search, beside every ordinary search click.

The rule behind it is a list. GA4 sets the medium to ai-assistant when the referrer matches its list of AI assistants. A tool that is not on the list, or that sends no referrer, lands somewhere else. Default channel groups cannot be edited, though a property can build custom channel groups.

For Google's AI features, Search Console is the place to look instead. Its Generative AI performance report counts impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode.

In practice

An accounting firm's GA4 report shows a small but growing AI Assistant channel and assumes that is its whole AI audience. Part of the picture is missing: visits from Google's AI Overviews are inside Organic Search. The firm reads the AI Assistant channel for ChatGPT and similar tools, and Search Console's Generative AI performance report for Google's AI features.

Not the same as

Organic Search
Organic Search counts visits from non-ad links in search results, and GA4 includes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode in it. The AI Assistant channel counts referrals from standalone AI tools.

Why it matters to you

A report that says AI traffic is small may only be describing one of the two places it lands. Anyone presenting AI traffic should say which channel the number came from, and whether Google's AI features are in it.

What to ask or check

  1. 01Is this AI traffic figure the AI Assistant channel alone, or does it include Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode?
  2. 02Which referrers make up the AI Assistant channel in this property?
  3. 03Has anyone set up a custom channel group, and does it change how AI traffic is counted?

What people get wrong

That the AI Assistant channel shows all traffic from AI. Google defines it to exclude its own AI Overviews and AI Mode, which it counts inside Organic Search.

AI performance report

An AI performance report shows how often AI search features show or cite your site. Google's version counts impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Bing's counts citations and states its numbers do not indicate ranking, authority or placement. Neither publishes a position inside an AI answer.

AI Overviews

An AI Overview is the summary Google sometimes places above the results, with links to sources. Google says they are only shown when its systems judge them additive to classic Search, so they often do not trigger. There is no special file or markup that gets you into them.

UTM parameters

UTM parameters are tags added to the end of a link so analytics can record where a visit came from. Google says to always use utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. Values are case sensitive, so utm_source=Google and utm_source=google are counted as two different sources.

Conversion

A conversion is an action you told the ad platform to count as a result, like a form or a call. The number is not a headcount. Google's One conversion setting counts one per ad click, not per person, and Microsoft calls the same two settings All and Unique.

Enhanced conversions

Enhanced conversions send a hashed version of your customer's email address or phone number to the ad platform, which matches it against its own signed-in account holders. Both platforms describe it as a replacement for third-party cookies, and both match against their own user base.

Offline conversion import

An offline conversion import tells the ad platform that a click became a sale somewhere it could not see. You store the click ID with the lead and hand it back when the deal closes. Microsoft states that anything uploaded more than 90 days after the click is not imported.
