Marketing Retainer
A marketing retainer is the recurring monthly fee paid to an agency for ongoing services. It covers strategy, execution, reporting, and account management for a defined scope. Retainers vary widely in price and value, and most owners cannot tell the difference until they have been burned at least once.
Fair retainer ranges by scope
Single-channel local SEO or single-channel paid management usually runs $1,500 to $3,500 per month. Multi-channel retainers including paid ads, SEO, and creative typically run $4,000 to $9,000. Full-service including ads, SEO, content, web, and AI deployments runs $9,000 to $25,000 plus.
If a retainer is dramatically cheaper than these ranges, it is usually a junior contractor with no senior oversight. Dramatically more expensive without scope to match usually means you are paying for agency overhead, not your account.
Contract terms that protect both sides
30 or 60-day mutual notice instead of 12-month lock-ins. Full ownership of ad accounts, website code, and content stays with the client. Disclosed pass-through pricing on ad spend, not hidden markups. Defined deliverables and KPIs, not vague ongoing optimization language.
An agency confident in their work will agree to all four. Anyone who pushes back on any of them is protecting themselves from accountability.
